The Project.

The Cinque Terre and the Levanto Hills, defined by the production regulations for Cinque Terre and Cinque Terre Sciacchetrà DOP and Colline di Levanto DOP”, are home to a unique viticulture shaped by steep, rugged terrain. Many vineyards cling to slopes too steep for machinery, accessible only on foot, with breathtaking gradients.

Here, the dedication of local winemakers — who reclaim small patches of land from abandonment — is essential to preserving the landscape itself. In the Cinque Terre especially, this delicate balance is maintained by ancient dry-stone terraces (muretti a secco), recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage.

To illustrate the contrast between these two wine-growing areas along the eastern Ligurian Riviera, one could say that in the Cinque Terre, vineyards plunge dramatically toward the sea, while in the Levanto Hills they descend more gently.

Set against a backdrop of sky, land, and sea, the vines grow between 50 and 500 meters above sea level, predominantly producing white grape varieties such as Bosco, Vermentino, and Albarola, blended in varying proportions according to local regulations. Yet the region also offers fine red wines, crafted from Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo, and Canaiolo grapes.

Within this context, the Cinque Terre and Levanto Hills Wine Route — promoted by local producers, associations, consortia, and institutions — offers a mapped itinerary designed to introduce visitors to the area’s wineries. It encourages wine lovers, hikers, and travelers alike to slow down and savor a more immersive experience: engaging with winemakers, enjoying tastings, and exploring vineyards and cellars on guided tours. A true alternative to fast-paced mass tourism, this journey enriches visitors with authentic emotions and a deeper understanding of the history, culture, beauty, and flavors of these extraordinary yet fragile landscapes.

Protection and enhancement of the territory.
